9th Century temple is the Largest Buddhist monument in existence ~
Borobudur A Gigantic Temple Sight (click on this to read up on this Temple)
We took the city bus out to Borobudur which was about an hours drive ~ and when we got there we were asked to wear a sarong out of respect for the Temple - OK ! Will do! Then someone rented us a umbrella because it was "cooking HOT" out here and the rock was HOT too so a whole lot of heat came off of it!
This temple is immense! So BIG -
It was pretty pricey we thought $19,00- each - but many people come here from all over the world to see this Temple!
Boy - do we look like tourist ....or what?
Students stopped us to take a pictures with them -
See the Temple in the distance ~
I took a picture of the rocks - one by one laid out to put this whole temple together...they are fitted but not cemented at all - just laid out to fit ~
See ...the rocks are loose - just laid out side by side!
Going up the steps..you could feel the heat from the rocks~
Up Up Up we climbed - and each of those steps were high - and the people are shorter- so for them it was quite a climb I am sure!
There is about 5 levels -
This dome was missing and so now you can see the Buddha -
I did climb up one step to show you Mr Buddha and stretched up high so you could look inside too! Each dome has a
a Buddha inside -
This is the last level and this picture is taken looking up to the very top.
Just a beautiful sight from up here!
This close-up shows you how the rock cutters back in the 8-9th century would cut the rock on a slant - to round the rock for the dome---all done by hand!
Pretty neat picture huh of the surroundings?!
Say "Cheese!"
Oh by the way - the monks back in those days - did need electricity to you know! ha!Nick's pretty tall - and just look at those steps how high each one is?!
It was quite a day - we headed to the exit - handed in our sarong's and the umbrella we had rented - and the sweet gal gave me this very big hug - and I kissed her right back! Of Course!
Nick were ready to head back to Yogyakarta - we had another city bus to take back - so we were pretty hot & sticky by the time we got back in town!
But what a treat it was to see this overwhelming mass of rock today!
I can't imagine how hard it was for the men who built it- 60,000 workers - taking 10 yrs to build it and how dangerous it was to build back on those day - ugh!
