Last Day in Kuah July 5th

Wow What a fun day we had today! Yep...woke up nice and rested and decided to do some looking around in this immediate area before we leave to go to Cenang - the main town on this island.

We were hungry so we headed towards the stores...but it was very quiet on the streets..."where is everybody?" It almost seems like a Saturday here - yet it is Friday...schools are out too...hmmm?

We came across a shopping center and would you believe it - there was only one thing open....

....................a McDonald's of all places...are we gonna do it Nick? Are we hungry enough? Well how about some scrambled eggs and a hash brown? Yeah that will do.

We strolled out and enjoyed seeing a really pretty park Legend Park ~
 Do you see the coconuts?

It was so pretty there  and the water...did you notice how quiet & still it is today? Amazing!
Do you see that eagle in the distance?  It is the landmark for Langkawi Island.
There's my Nick doing his Indo squat..I sure can't do that! He says that is how they sweep in the homes - OK Nick you can sweep then! Your job!

Jim...we were so missing your "drumstick" snack in the evenings?!!!..........
......so today we had one on you! Thanks! It was really good!

As we walked over to the Ferry Terminal we came across some scooters that could be rented...and oh what fun it is to do that...shall we Nick? Yes...let's do it! Drive on those roads like the locals do...!

So off we went...up to the north part of the island...we wanted to get away from the town and see more of how the locals live. We took a 19km ride...it was so much fun! We enjoyed the coolness  of wind...felt so good - what fun it was to see the sights! So many scooters and motorcycles and cars sped by...people drive very fast in Malaysia...and they are not so into abiding the rules on the road...dah what rules?
Well we took it easy..no hurry!  We came  to a beautiful hotel...Four Season Resort...and we decided to stop there and have something to drink!

We took a walk on the premises.

Look at this wall..how the palm trees are growing out of them...?
Of course Ellen liked that...a lot! Para-sailing!

There in the distance was some islands.

Ah...a cappuccino coffee and a fresh local fruit platter...nice!

The server was a Malaysian gal "Kheng"and again so sweet!

The Malaysian people are very gentle - very kind and helpful.  They are interested to know how many days you are staying...how old you are...where you are from...and often they might say they can speak English...but then they don't and shyly respond back.  But our experiences have always been pleasant! When we were driving with our scooter through the little villages ~ one man partly or almost toothless - stuck his arm out of the window and with a big smile waved to us so' enthusiastically as they passed us by in their car!

Yep those two westerners scooting down the road in a remote part of the island...I am sure it was not a common sight.

Oh by the way...we asked our hostess who might own a hotel like this and she shared with us that a Canadian firm, an Arab sheikh and would you believe it Bill Gates own this resort! Yes we made him a little richer today!

We took a video clip

as we traveled on the scooter back to town...which we will down load once we can hook up to a modem.
Wifi takes forever to download!
It was a fun day and we are ready to call it a day!
We had to return the scooter back at the airport so off we went....

We hope you all in the States had a wonderful 4th of July! There was mention of it on the news this evening!
Welterusten! Goodnight! Pleasant dreams!  12:40 am for us!

Tomorrow Nico's Birthday...!!!!! July 6th!

This was such a pretty flower...wanted to share it with you!  Meg...see how I used the close-up lens  you taught me with the forced flash...I am learning girl!

I just had to share this with you all back in the States...this is a hot water heater on the wall.  It heats the water as you use it. Then turns off when you are not using it! In Holland this is most common...and I think it is a great way to heat your water directly...no running out of warm water ever!
Polly - this Malaysian car reminded me of you!!! That evening
we returned the scooter back to the Ferry Terminal where we had rented it from: click on this link

As we were walking to dinner this evening a family walked in front of us...and this little boy was steering at those tall strange people behind him! So cute! I kept smiling and waving...but he looked very serious ~

Another Malaysian car...Proton ~ unfamiliar to us..but so cute..I can picture myself zipping through town with this!

Last thing to share with you...right next to the toilet...hmmm can you guess what that might be for? Oh yes one other interesting thing...a lot of people:Malaysian, Chinese and Japanese still squat when they use the bathrooms...so they do have a bathroom in the restrooms for especially that! A hole in the tile floor. But...what you also will experience...is...that often people squat on top of the toilet seat yes... stand on the seat of the toilet...so not too great to use...I was wondering what those scuff marks were on most of the toilet seat.... - you know what I mean? Oh and you surely can not walk into a public toilet and expect toilet paper...that is 50/50 chance...most often NOT! Oh my goodness....Ellen is learning a whole lot!  DON'T BE WITHOUT TOILET PAPER-EVER!!!

..........................................GOOD NIGHT!

  1. Such beautiful snaps! Ellen you are a great photographer and a wonderful story teller! The surroundings are so peaceful and lack throngs of people! How fun to find little places to get a little bite to eat!
Life is good! I like the 'sapu lidi' Nico! The babu used a sapu lidi to make the beds with in the old country....The big red flower...is that a 'kembang sepatu'...a flower as big as a shoe?
Keep the posts and pics coming! Such a delight to see and read them!
Have a great birthday, Nick! Enjoy, love you both,
