We woke up in Innsbruck our last morning and saw the Sun rising up - so pretty!
We started our day heading to the train station at 9:40 - and waited
for the departure at 10:21 am. It would be a 4 hour trip making a stop
& change of train in Zurich. The train was very nice...probably the
nicest train we have boarded. Very comfortable seats...enough luggage
area for everyone to park the suitcases between seats and overhead.
We
found our seats and got comfortable. The ride was very pleasant and it
is fun to just relax, look out the window and enjoy the beauty as we
ride past village after village...seeing really pretty lakes and the
mountains...always the gorgeous mountains of Austria!
We
had a very quick change ( 10 minutes) from the one train to the other
one...and the reason was our train leaving Innsbruck was was late into the station - thus
causing this connection to be a bit tight!
BUT Nick & I did the
"huzzle" and we made it...just in time! We enjoyed a nice chat with
"Julia" who spoke her English really well! She was heading back to
Hanover after visiting her boyfriend in Zurich for the weekend.
So
off we went again for another 50 minutes to Basel ~ We arrived into
Basel at 3 pm and took our time to get off and sit in a coffee shop to
decide where we would go next!
Nick left me in the
coffee shop and he went off hunting down a hotel...and there are usually
many around the train stations in Europe. So within 40 min he was back
and off we went down the street to the hotel. We are becoming quite
good at this....suitcases on wheels...backpacks on the back...and then
carrying our smaller backpacks on our suitcase....!
We
checked in and was glad to settle for the evening! We did go back to
the station to inquire about a train ride along the Rhine River???? Is
there one?
YES! She said...cool....so we are taking it
along the Rhine & then end the 4 hour trip in Frankfurt. Nick has
been there long ago with the family and wanted to go see it again!
So
that is the plan...tomorrow we head out again...to Frankfurt...we have
decided not to stay in Basel - it is pretty expensive here in
Switzerland...they are not part of the Euro - still using the
francs.
We went out for dinner - taking the tram to the
center and enjoyed a stroll through the old streets of Basel...and had a
bite to eat...again Sunday evening and everyone is out for a stroll enjoying a cup of coffee or a
drink of coffee or a glass of wine or beer...just walking the downtown
area...and many terraces are filled with people enjoying their Sunday
evening!
Headed to the train station to have a bite to eat & wait for our train to Basel Switzerland ~
This is a coffee shop at the train station! Yes lots of these cute places - to pick a sandwich up and a snack for the trip going or arrival!
The train stations in Europe are busy places...all the buses & trams come to them...and there is a connection always from the airport also to the train station.
Loaded up with suitcases...and squeezing into a elevator ~ We are always thankful to have a hotel close by the train station...so we do not have to go far lugging them! It has worked out nicely and most train stations are located close by the center of town...so we can walk it! Convenient!
Oh Pol ~ we saw the Olympic area from a distance...but it just didn't work out to even go there! We had to return the car rental - we had been a bit tired - and just needed to rest in the hotel before getting on the train again the next morning! So this picture is for you...at a far distance you can see this!!!!
We left Innsbruck and watched outside this beautiful country pass by...and then we entered into Switzerland...still hilly but the houses changed...oh give me back those darling Chalet's!!!!
The Train was very very comfortable and roomy!
We passed by some very beautiful natural lakes going toward Zurich where we would make a stop...and a change of train to go on to Basel!
The route of the train was on the screen - just like in the airplanes! Nice! They say that the German Trains are the nicest in Europe...and this was a German train!
Then we arrived in Switzerland...after 4 hours. Right on the border of Switzerland & Germany! We wanted to take a train ride along the Rhine - that was the plan~ we checked into the hotel - Nick found...close to the train station and then we headed out again to see Basel ~
We took the tram into town ...and it was a very nice one...4 trams connected - Wow!
It was Sunday late afternoon - and so it was quiet in downtown...we strolled like so many others...the old streets of Basel and saw again some beautiful old buildings! Dating back to the early 1500's!!!
Basel Switzerland - A old town on the Rhine ~
All made from sugar....done so well...everyone stopped to look at it...I got curious 'what" they were looking at?? So now I see....it was a chocolate shop! And this was a vey big rose indeed!!
The steeple was gold! How impressive huh? And the tower - so beautiful way up there!
The wall was painted!
We stopped for a bite to eat...and watched the people stroll by...just like everyone else was doing this late Sunday afternoon!
You can hear the different languages being spoken...and I am understanding German more then I realize...it is fun to decipher the language!
Back to the hotel...and tomorrow we go on with our trip...along the Rhine by train...to Mainz/Frankfurt - we will be about 5 hours from Holland then~
